The Easiest Method to Melt Chocolate

Once you've tried this method, you'll probably abandon all other methods such as microwaving and melting in a double boiler. Even if the chocolate is old or dried out a bit, this method restores it beautifully.

Place chocolate squares in a glass bowl. Pour boiling water over the chocolate. Use a flat dinner knife to test the squares and when they're completely soft, pour off the water.

It's as simple as that!

Hello Jennifer,

What I like to do is boil the kettle, break the chocolate up into a stainless steel bowl then pour the just boiled water into the kitchen sink (plug in of course!) and just sit the bowl on top. Sometimes if I have a lot of chocolate and butter in the bowl I will have to replace the water once just to finish it off but thats it. I just get on with the rest of the recipe whilst it is melting and not having to worry about it burning or anything.

Sherrie, that is a great idea - similar to using a double boiler but not quite. Not everyone has a double boiler, so this trick is good to remember, especially when one wants to melt butter as well as chocolate. I like that it is minimal fuss and one can do other things while it is melting. Thanks for sharing that! :-)

My recent method is good for reviving chocolate that has white spots on it, is grayish or generally a bit old. Trying to melt such chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave is awful as it no longer melts smoothly, but pouring boiling water over it revives it.

You're welcome :)

I have never really have that problem with old chocolate going white unless it is cheapo easter eggs that someone gave me. Reason being, chocolate doesn't last very long in my house! :D

ROFL The comment re chocolate that doesn't last long in your house. It's usually the case here as well, however, my dear husband had bought boxes and boxes of unsweetened chocolate in the States at a Walmart, I think it was - they were on sale. He likes to do that kind of thing! Buy one, get one free usually proves irresistible to him.
